KSPW 2019, our second annual conference, will take place at the Pipitea campus of Victoria University of Wellington on Saturday the 9th March 2019. (If you want to know how it went last year, check out KSPW 18 by the numbers.)
HOW Does THE EVENT WORK?
The event includes speakers, performers, and an opportunity to meet others who are also interested in diversity and gender equality. And yes, there will be food! Doors will open at 10am, the event will run from 11am - 4pm and lunch and afternoon tea are included.
WHO Can ATTEND?
Everyone is welcome to attend, irrespective of gender identity and expression, ethnicity, fully or less-abled. Our theme for this event is #intersectionality – we want everyone to feel welcome and included, and to create a safe space to connect and share.
Who will be speaking?
We will have a range of speakers from around Aotearoa and beyond. This includes, but is not limited to, Māori, less-abled, LGBTQIA+, refugee women and gender diverse people.
HOW Do WE PRACTICE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AT THE EVENT?
In a range of ways - from our organising team to our partners, through to the physical set-up of the event (such as access to the site and gender-neutral bathrooms) and speakers and performers on the day. We spent a lot of time trying to crack this nut… but it’s the hardest nut to crack. We did our best to engage across a wide range of communities, but we also acknowledge there were things that we will learn along the way.
iS THE EVENT ACCESSIBLE?
We work to make the event accessible for everyone. We’re currently updating our 2018 Accessibility Guide to reflect out new venue for 2019 and to add all the new things we have learned about accessibility. When it’s complete we will link to it from here.
We include Alternative Text to all our images on social media for screen readers. You'll see that our posts on Instagram and Facebook have an Image/Photo Description mentioned in our captions, while on Twitter, it is in-built into the image itself. We will also provide subtitles to our video content too!
Please look out on all our social media handles for all the amazing content that we are about to share, give us a thumbs up if you like (or love!) what we do, and importantly spread the word!
HOW ARE WE WORKING WITH OTHER GROUPS IN THIS SPACE?
We recognise that without the efforts of countless people over the years and today, an event like Kate Sheppard Place Women would not be possible. Kate Sheppard Place Women is following in the footsteps of the work done tirelessly by those dedicated to giving voice to the marginalised. They are the pioneers, and this event builds on their foundations.
Kate Sheppard Place Women is proud to partner with a number of organisations that work to promote and support minority voices. For more information about our partners, take a look here.
